How we chose the best boilers for 2026#
A familiar badge and long warranty do not tell the whole story. We assessed heating and hot-water performance, efficiency at high and low demand, construction, servicing access, controls, manufacturer support, output choices and installed value.
We have focused on combi boilers because they provide heating and hot water without a separate cylinder and are a common replacement choice. Homes with several bathrooms or frequent simultaneous hot-water use may be better served by a system boiler and cylinder.
1. Vaillant ecoTEC plus 832 — best overall#
The Vaillant ecoTEC plus 832 combines strong hot-water performance with a comparatively low minimum heating output, stainless-steel heat exchanger and established controls.
Vaillant publishes a central-heating output range of 3.5 to 24.9kW in condensing conditions and a domestic hot-water flow rate of 13.0 litres per minute at a 35°C temperature rise. It is rated at 94% ErP efficiency and has A ratings for both heating and hot water.
The low end of that range matters because a house needs much less heat in mild weather than on the coldest winter day. The current ecoTEC plus also uses Vaillant’s IoniDETECT combustion monitoring, offers modulation of up to 1:10 and is smart-control ready.
Who is it suitable for?#
The 832 is a strong candidate for many medium-sized homes with one main bathroom and good mains-water flow. It may not suit households wanting two showers at full flow simultaneously. No combi can deliver more water than the incoming main supplies, so an on-site pressure and flow test remains essential.
Warranty position#
The ecoTEC plus has a five-year standard guarantee. Vaillant says eligible installers can offer up to eight years, or 10 years with the required installer registration and Vaillant filter. Registration within 30 days and annual servicing are required.

2. Worcester Bosch Greenstar 8000+ 36kW — best for a larger or busier home#
The Worcester Bosch Greenstar 8000+ 36kW is our high-output choice for bigger, busier family homes.
The 36kW combi has a published hot-water flow rate of 15.2 litres per minute at a 35°C rise, subject to sufficient dynamic mains pressure. Its central-heating output range is 5.1 to 33.7kW, while Worcester quotes 94% central-heating efficiency and A ratings for heating and hot water.
At 780mm high, 440mm wide and 365mm deep, it is larger than the compact Ideal below, so available cupboard or enclosure space needs checking. The range supports wireless controls, and an optional intelligent filling system is available for compatible installations.
Who is it suitable for?#
The 36kW model can suit a larger house where a combi remains appropriate and faster bath filling or a stronger shower is wanted. Higher output does not automatically mean a better match, however. Where simultaneous bathroom use is the priority, a correctly designed cylinder system is often more comfortable.
Guarantee position#
Worcester lists an eight-year standard guarantee, rising to 10 years with an eligible Greenstar System Filter. An extended guarantee of up to 12 years is available when its installer, filter and registration conditions are met.

Ideal’s current specification gives the C30 a central-heating output range of 6.1 to 24.2kW and a maximum domestic hot-water output of 30.3kW. Its hot-water flow rate is 12.4 litres per minute at a 35°C rise. It has A ratings for heating and hot water, with a published seasonal space-heating efficiency of 94%.
The UK-made Logic Max is available in 24, 30 and 35kW combi versions.
Who is it suitable for?#
The C30 is a sensible fit for many small to medium one-bathroom homes. A compact flat may only need the 24kW version, while greater hot-water demand may call for the 35kW model or a different system. The survey—not a bedroom-count chart—should decide.

A 30kW combi does not necessarily deliver 30kW to the radiators#
On a combi, the headline rating is often driven by hot-water performance rather than building heat loss. The Vaillant 832, for example, provides up to 24.9kW for central heating under its stated test condition, while the Ideal C30 provides up to 24.2kW. Enerus therefore assesses heating and hot-water demand separately: oversizing can encourage cycling, while undersizing the hot-water side can produce disappointing showers and slow bath filling.

A system boiler with a suitable hot-water cylinder may be better when:
