Alpha boilers are generally positioned as dependable, competitively priced appliances for homeowners who want modern condensing technology without automatically moving into the most expensive part of the market.

The current domestic range includes combi, system and regular boilers, so Alpha can cover everything from a compact flat with one bathroom to a larger family home using a separate hot-water cylinder. The right model, however, depends on more than the badge on the front. Your heating load, incoming water supply, hot-water demand, existing system and controls all need to be considered.

Who is Alpha Heating Innovation?#

Alpha Heating Innovation has supplied heating products in the UK for more than 50 years. It forms part of the Italian Immergas group, an international heating manufacturer with operations and distribution across numerous countries.

That backing gives Alpha access to established product development and manufacturing resources while it continues to supply products specifically for the UK heating market. In 2025, Alpha marked 25 years as part of Immergas.

For homeowners, Alpha’s main attraction is straightforward: its boilers combine familiar modern features, compact dimensions and useful warranty options at a price that can compare favourably with some of the best-known premium brands.

That does not make every Alpha model right for every property. The quality of the design and installation remains just as important as the appliance itself.

Alpha’s domestic range is divided into three principal boiler types.

Alpha E-Tec Plus NX combi boiler#

The E-Tec Plus NX is Alpha’s premium domestic combi range. It is available in 28, 33 and 38 models, giving it a broader hot-water range than the standard E-Tec NX.

The larger models do not necessarily make a home warmer. A combi’s headline size is often driven by the power needed to produce hot water instantaneously. The central-heating output should be adjusted to the property’s calculated requirement during commissioning rather than left unnecessarily high.

The E-Tec Plus NX includes a stainless-steel heat exchanger, integrated filling loop, variable-speed pump and compatibility with weather compensation, OpenTherm and Alpha’s own control system. Alpha currently advertises a 10-year warranty as standard for this range, subject to its registration, installation, servicing and warranty conditions.

Who might choose the E-Tec Plus NX?#

It can be a sensible option for someone who:

wants Alpha’s longer standard warranty;
needs a stronger combi hot-water output;
has sufficient incoming mains flow and pressure;
wants a compact wall-mounted appliance; or
values compatible modulating and weather-compensating controls.

Even the 38 model cannot create more water than the incoming main can supply. Before recommending a higher-output combi, Enerus checks the water performance at the property and discusses whether more than one outlet will regularly be used at once.

Alpha E-Tec NX combi boiler#

The E-Tec NX is Alpha’s mainstream combi and is available in 28 and 33 models. The published dimensions are 712mm high, 440mm wide and 255mm deep, making it slightly shallower than the Plus version.

The 28 model provides a published hot-water flow rate of 12.1 litres per minute at a 35°C rise, while the 33 increases this to 14.1 litres per minute. These figures provide a more useful comparison than model names alone, although real outlet performance still depends on the temperature of the incoming cold water and the property’s available flow.

Like the Plus range, the E-Tec NX uses a stainless-steel heat exchanger and supports compatible weather compensation and modulating controls. It is likely to be considered where the customer wants a straightforward Alpha combi but does not require the highest hot-water output or the particular package offered with the Plus range.

Alpha Evoke NX combi boiler#

The Evoke NX is another compact combi option in Alpha’s current range. Alpha states that it is supplied exclusively through independent merchants, so availability can depend on the installer and local supply chain.

It is intended to offer efficient, uncomplicated heating and hot water at an accessible point in the range. As with the E-Tec models, its suitability should be judged using the exact current specification rather than assuming all Alpha combis perform identically.

Alpha E-Tec NXS system boiler#

The E-Tec NXS is designed for sealed heating systems using a separate hot-water cylinder. It is available in 20, 30 and 35 models and incorporates components such as the pump and expansion vessel within the boiler casing.

A system boiler can be preferable to a combi when a household has:

two or more bathrooms;
several people using hot water around the same time;
a large bath or higher-flow showers;
an existing cylinder worth retaining; or
suitable space for a new, correctly sized cylinder.

Stored hot water can serve multiple outlets more effectively than many combis, provided the cylinder, incoming water supply and distribution pipework are properly designed. The trade-off is that the cylinder occupies space and its stored supply can be depleted until it reheats.

Alpha E-Tec Regular boiler#

The E-Tec Regular is Alpha’s heat-only range, available in 15R, 20R and 25R versions. These boilers are designed for systems where the pump, expansion arrangement and hot-water cylinder are located outside the appliance.

Regular boilers are often considered when replacing an existing heat-only boiler and retaining much of a traditional system. This can reduce unnecessary alterations in a property where the current layout remains serviceable.

Alpha publishes compact dimensions of 600 × 390 × 305mm for this range and currently advertises a seven-year standard warranty, subject to its terms.

A regular boiler is not automatically old-fashioned or inefficient: current products use condensing technology. However, the condition of the existing cylinder, controls, pump, tanks and pipework should be assessed before deciding that a like-for-like replacement is the best long-term option.

Are Alpha boilers efficient?#

Alpha’s current domestic gas boilers use condensing technology. This allows heat that would otherwise leave through the flue to be recovered when operating conditions permit.

The efficiency printed on a product label does not tell the whole story. Real performance is affected by:

accurate boiler sizing;
the minimum output and modulation range;
radiator sizing;
heating flow and return temperatures;
weather or load compensation;
system balancing;
pipework insulation;
controls and heating schedules; and
the cleanliness and condition of the heating system.

A correctly configured mid-range boiler can perform better in practice than a premium appliance connected to a poorly designed or unbalanced system.

Understanding Alpha boiler warranties#

Warranty length varies across the Alpha range and may be extended when qualifying accessories or installation packs are fitted. At the time of this review, Alpha advertises a 10-year standard warranty on the E-Tec Plus NX and seven years on the E-Tec Regular. Other model terms and promotional packages should be confirmed when obtaining a quotation.

A long warranty is valuable, but only when its conditions are followed. These commonly include:

installation and commissioning by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer;
correct registration within the manufacturer’s required period;
completion of the Benchmark commissioning record;
annual servicing by a competent engineer;
appropriate system cleaning, inhibitor and water treatment; and
use and maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Is an Alpha boiler right for your home?#

It may not be the automatic answer if another manufacturer offers a better fit for the available space, hot-water requirement, controls, flue arrangement, local support or budget.
