Why Enerus Is Not Heat Geek Affiliated, Approved or Trained

Enerus is not affiliated with Heat Geek. We are not Heat Geek approved, certified or trained, and we do not present ourselves as part of its installer network.

That is a deliberate commercial decision—not an omission in our qualifications.

Heat Geek has helped make subjects such as low-temperature heating, room-by-room heat-loss calculations, hydraulic design and weather compensation more visible within the domestic heating industry. Those are valuable subjects. They are also established engineering principles rather than methods owned by one training provider or installer network.

Enerus already designs and installs heat pumps around those fundamentals. We do not need to purchase a third-party badge, subscribe to an external sales platform or receive leads through another company to practise good heating engineering.

The short answer

Enerus remains independent because our competence is built on direct design and installation experience, recognised qualifications, MCS certification, audited processes and responsibility for our own work. Heat Geek membership is an optional commercial relationship—not a legal requirement, government accreditation or substitute for MCS certification.

What is Heat Geek?

Heat Geek began as an educational platform for heating engineers and has developed into a training provider, consumer-facing brand, software platform and national installer network.

Its own installer pages describe a package containing:

  • heating and heat-pump training;
  • installer verification;
  • use of Heat Geek branding;
  • survey, design and sales applications;
  • MCS and Boiler Upgrade Scheme administrative support;
  • technical support;
  • an installer community;
  • tools for converting an installer’s existing enquiries; and
  • customer leads sent through the Heat Geek platform.

As checked on 2 August 2026, Heat Geek advertises installer subscriptions starting at £250 per month excluding VAT for its Learn level and £350 per month excluding VAT for its Upgrades level. The higher tier includes leads, applications, technical support, administrative support and work backed by the Heat Geek guarantee.

That makes Heat Geek more than a course. It is a commercial ecosystem connecting training, software, branding, administration and lead generation.

There is nothing inherently wrong with that business model. It may be particularly useful to heating engineers who are entering the heat-pump market, want a structured learning route or prefer external support for design, administration and customer acquisition.

It is not, however, the only credible route to becoming a competent heat-pump designer or installer.

Heat Geek membership is not a legal or government requirement

The distinction between a private badge and recognised certification matters.

For an installation supported through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, the installer must be appropriately MCS certified. Ofgem’s current installer guidance also requires participation in an approved consumer code. The installation must meet the relevant MCS standards.

There is no requirement for the installer to be Heat Geek trained, approved or affiliated.

Heat Geek offers training and states that its current installer qualification is NOCN accredited and regulated by Ofqual. That can be a valid development route for an individual engineer. Joining its commercial network is still separate from the statutory, certification and consumer-protection requirements that apply to an installation.

Enerus holds its own MCS certification and accepts direct responsibility for the systems it contracts to design, install, commission and hand over.

Good heat-pump design did not begin with Heat Geek

Many of the practices now strongly associated with the Heat Geek brand are established parts of competent heating design.

These include:

  • completing room-by-room heat-loss calculations;
  • selecting a heat pump using its output at the required outdoor and water temperatures;
  • designing radiators or underfloor heating for lower flow temperatures;
  • assessing system water flow and pressure loss;
  • avoiding unnecessary buffers, pumps and hydraulic separation;
  • using weather compensation;
  • balancing the heating system;
  • commissioning against the completed design; and
  • monitoring the relationship between flow temperature and system efficiency.

These principles come from thermodynamics, hydraulic design, product data, British and European calculation methods, manufacturer requirements and recognised industry standards. Current MCS design rules require installers to establish matters such as room heat losses, emitter outputs, design flow temperature, hot-water requirements and estimated system performance.

No private training brand owns those fundamentals.

Enerus developed its design-first approach through professional heating and renewable-energy work, direct project experience and the requirements attached to designing complete systems. We were carrying out detailed surveys, calculating room heat losses, specifying emitters and planning low-temperature systems independently of Heat Geek.

We welcome any organisation that encourages the industry to take those tasks seriously. We simply do not accept that subscribing to one particular network is the only evidence that an installer understands them.

Who can benefit from the Heat Geek model?

Heat Geek’s own material says its learning is suitable regardless of the installer’s starting point. Its programme covers survey, design, installation, commissioning and MCS compliance, and its network supports engineers through their early installations.

That proposition has an obvious audience:

  • boiler engineers moving into renewable heating;
  • installers without an established heat-pump design process;
  • small businesses wanting external MCS or grant administration;
  • engineers looking for peer support;
  • companies wanting a packaged survey and sales platform; and
  • installers seeking additional leads under a recognised consumer brand.

Enerus is in a different position. We already operate as an MCS-certified heat-pump designer and installer. Our business has its own survey process, design capability, management systems, customer contracts, grant administration, commissioning procedures and aftercare.

Joining another commercial network would mean paying for services and a customer-acquisition structure that duplicate work we already undertake ourselves.

Why Enerus chooses to remain independent

We control the complete customer journey

Customers contract with Enerus, communicate with Enerus and receive their design, installation and aftercare from Enerus. Their enquiry does not need to be routed through a national lead platform before reaching the people responsible for the work.

This gives us direct visibility from the first conversation through to the first winter of operation.

We design under our own responsibility

Our technical survey collects the building and heating-system information needed for a complete design. We then calculate room-by-room heat losses, assess emitters, establish the intended flow temperature, select equipment and produce a written design proposal.

We do not outsource the engineering judgement to a badge or assume that software can replace a competent designer.

We choose products without network pressure

Remaining independent allows us to recommend equipment according to the property, calculated load, required flow temperature, installation constraints, manufacturer support and customer budget.

We are not obliged to sell a particular proposition simply because it fits another platform’s commercial model.

We own the customer relationship

Lead-generation platforms inevitably sit between the customer and the local installer to some extent. Enerus invests in its own reputation, website, enquiries and long-term customer relationships.

That matters when a homeowner needs advice after installation, wants an annual service or returns several years later with another project.

We can be judged on our actual work

Enerus has installed more than 1,000 heating systems and has direct experience across heat pumps, boilers, cylinders, radiators, underfloor heating and heating controls.

Our credibility should come from the quality of our surveys, the accuracy of our designs, the standard of our installations, our commissioning records, customer feedback and the support we provide afterwards—not from displaying every available industry badge.

Does this mean we oppose Heat Geek?

No. We agree with much of the technical message: heat pumps should be designed properly, flow temperatures matter, radiators must be selected against calculated room loads and commissioning should confirm that the finished system matches the design.

Our disagreement is with the suggestion—sometimes created by industry marketing—that a Heat Geek badge is the defining test of a high-quality installer.

It is one private training and network model. It is not the regulator, it is not MCS and it is not the sole authority on low-temperature heating design.

We also think consumers should clearly understand when they are dealing with a commercial lead and installation platform. Heat Geek openly promotes leads, sales tools and business growth as benefits to installers. That commercial role should not be confused with independent regulation of the wider industry.

Our criticism is therefore focused on the distinction between commercial membership and demonstrated competence. For Enerus, the membership does not add enough value to our established design-and-installation business to justify the cost, duplication or loss of independence.

What should customers look for instead of one badge?

A collection of logos cannot tell you whether a particular system has been designed properly. Before choosing any heat-pump installer—including Enerus—ask to see what will actually be provided.

1. Current MCS certification

For Boiler Upgrade Scheme installations, confirm that the contractor is appropriately MCS certified and able to manage the grant application.

2. A room-by-room heat-loss calculation

The installer should assess individual rooms, not choose the heat pump from floor area, bedroom count or the output of the existing boiler.

3. A stated design flow temperature

Ask what water temperature the system is being designed around and why. Lower is not automatically better if the emitters cannot maintain comfort, but unnecessary high temperatures will reduce efficiency.

4. An emitter schedule

The proposal should identify which radiators can remain, which require upgrading and what output each room needs at the chosen temperatures.

5. Output checked at design conditions

Heat-pump capacity changes with outside temperature and water temperature. The selection should be based on manufacturer performance data at the relevant design point—not just the model number.

6. An honest performance estimate

Estimated seasonal efficiency and running costs should include stated assumptions. No installer can guarantee a particular electricity bill without knowing future weather, tariffs, occupancy and user behaviour.

7. A clear installation specification

The quotation should explain the heat pump, cylinder, radiators, controls, electrical work, pipe routes, insulation and other significant items included in the price.

8. Proper commissioning and handover

Ask how flow, controls, weather compensation, water treatment and operating data will be checked and recorded. The customer should receive a demonstration and relevant documentation.

9. Workmanship protection and aftercare

Find out who deals with problems, what the workmanship warranty covers and whether the installer provides servicing after the installation.

These questions provide more useful evidence than asking whether the engineer belongs to one optional commercial network.

Enerus provides a 24-month workmanship warranty on its heat-pump installations and offers a complimentary visit during the first winter. This allows us to review how the system is operating in genuinely cold conditions and make appropriate adjustments where required.

Independent by choice, accountable by design

Enerus is not Heat Geek affiliated because we do not need another company’s badge to tell us to calculate heat loss, design for suitable flow temperatures or commission a system properly.

We recognise the value of better industry education and support engineers improving their knowledge. We also believe customers deserve clarity: Heat Geek is a private training, software, branding and lead-generation network. Membership can be valuable, but it is not the only route to competence and it is not a requirement for a compliant, grant-eligible installation.

Enerus chooses to remain independent, maintain its own MCS certification and accept direct responsibility for every system it designs and installs.

Is a Heat Geek installer necessarily better than another MCS installer?

The badge confirms completion of Heat Geek’s process, but no badge can replace examination of the proposed design and the installer’s actual work. Customers should compare calculations, specifications, commissioning, warranties, experience and aftercare before deciding.

Can an independent installer still obtain the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?

Yes. The relevant requirement is appropriate MCS certification and compliance with Boiler Upgrade Scheme rules. Heat Geek membership is not required.
