Boiler Service Plan vs Boiler Cover: Which Is Right for You?#
A boiler service plan pays for planned maintenance, while boiler cover is usually an insurance or service product intended to help with specified breakdowns. A service plan can make annual servicing easier to budget for, but it does not automatically pay for repairs or replacement parts. Boiler cover may meet certain repair costs, but only within its policy terms, limits and exclusions. Paying as you go is a third option for homeowners who prefer not to make monthly payments.
The right choice depends on the age and condition of your boiler, the savings you have available for an unexpected repair, and whether you value predictable maintenance or broader breakdown protection. The important thing is to compare what is actually included—not just the monthly price.
Key information#
- Enerus Boiler Service Plan: £8 a month, including an annual boiler service, digital service record, efficiency optimisation, seven-day technical support, automatic rescheduling, priority booking and 15% off chargeable repair labour.
- Enerus Boiler Service & CP12 Plan: £10 a month and includes the annual service plus a landlord gas safety certificate.
- One-off Enerus boiler service: £89 if you would rather pay when the appointment takes place.
- Important: Enerus service plans are maintenance memberships, not breakdown insurance. Repairs, parts and call-outs are not included.
- Safety: gas-boiler servicing and gas work should be completed by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.
What is a boiler service plan?#
A boiler service plan is designed around prevention and routine maintenance. You make regular payments and the provider arranges a boiler service at the agreed interval, normally once a year. Depending on the provider, the plan may also include reminders, records, priority appointments or member discounts.
The Enerus Boiler Service Plan spreads the cost over 12 monthly payments. It includes the annual service and a digital record that you can access after the visit. Automatic rescheduling helps prevent the service from being forgotten, while technical support and priority booking give members a straightforward route back to the team if they have a heating question.
During a typical Enerus boiler service, the engineer visually inspects the appliance and flue, checks ventilation, operating pressure, safety devices and controls, and confirms that the boiler operates correctly. Combustion analysis and cleaning of serviceable components are completed where required for the particular boiler. If the engineer identifies a fault or recommends further work, this is explained separately.
A service is a useful opportunity to identify wear, deterioration or incorrect operation at an earlier stage. It cannot guarantee that the boiler will not break down later, and it is not a promise to fund future repairs.
Enerus expert view#
“The clearest way to think about a service plan is as scheduled care for your boiler. It helps you keep on top of annual maintenance and gives you a reliable service history. If a repair is needed, we explain the fault and the charge before additional work goes ahead.”
What is boiler cover?#
“Boiler cover” is a broad market term. It may describe standalone boiler insurance, home-emergency insurance, or a service contract offered by a heating or utility company. The details vary considerably, so the product name alone does not tell you what will happen when your boiler fails.
The Financial Ombudsman Service explains that home-emergency insurance provides help for specific emergencies and that insurers will normally pay for defined call-out, repair and parts costs. However, the policy wording determines what qualifies as an emergency and what is excluded. Most home-emergency policies also require the customer to pay an excess, and some repairs may be temporary rather than permanent.
A boiler-cover product could include an annual service, but this should never be assumed. It may also impose a waiting period, an age or condition requirement, a maximum claim value, restrictions on pre-existing faults, or a “beyond economic repair” test. Those are examples of terms found in the wider market, not a description of every policy. Always read the current policy summary and full terms before buying.
If you already have home insurance, check whether home-emergency protection is included or available as an add-on. That avoids accidentally paying twice for overlapping protection.
Service plan, boiler cover or pay as you go?#
| Option | Main purpose | Annual service | Breakdown costs | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Service plan | Scheduled maintenance and budgeting | Usually included; check the plan | Normally chargeable unless expressly included | Owners who want annual maintenance arranged |
| Boiler cover | Help with specified breakdowns | May or may not be included | Subject to terms, exclusions, limits and any excess | Owners who value defined emergency protection |
| Pay as you go | Paying only when work is booked | Booked and paid for separately | Customer pays repair costs | Owners comfortable holding a repair fund |
How to compare the real cost#
Multiplying the monthly price by 12 is a useful starting point, but it is not the whole comparison. Look at the value of the included annual service, whether there is an excess for each breakdown, and any limits on labour, parts, call-outs or total claims.
Also check how the price changes after the first year. Some boiler-cover promotions begin with a discounted introductory rate. A low headline price can become less attractive if it rises at renewal or if an excess is charged whenever you ask for help.
With a service plan, be clear about the boundary between included servicing and chargeable repair work. The current Enerus plan includes 15% off chargeable repair labour, but replacement parts, repair work and call-outs remain chargeable. Discount terms and exclusions apply. Current details should always be checked on the plan page before joining.
Which option might suit your boiler?#
A newer boiler under warranty#
Start with the manufacturer’s warranty conditions. Many manufacturers require evidence of regular servicing, so a service plan can help you maintain the service history and remember the due date. Check what the manufacturer covers before paying for separate breakdown protection that could duplicate it.
An older boiler#
Boiler cover can become more restrictive or expensive as an appliance ages. Read the eligibility and “beyond economic repair” wording carefully. If cover is poor value, planned servicing combined with a household repair fund may be more transparent. If faults are becoming frequent, ask whether continued repairs or a replacement boiler makes better long-term sense.
A rental property#
Landlords have legal duties that go beyond ordinary homeowner maintenance. HSE states that relevant gas appliances and flues must receive an annual gas safety check by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Records must be retained for two years, with a copy given to existing tenants within 28 days and to new tenants before they move in.
The £10-a-month Enerus Boiler Service & CP12 Plan combines the boiler service with a landlord gas safety certificate and digital records. Note that HSE warns a service and a landlord gas safety check are not interchangeable: each has its own purpose and required checks.
Questions to ask before signing up#
- Is this a maintenance membership, insurance policy or service contract?
- Is the annual boiler service included, and what checks does it cover?
- Are call-outs, labour and replacement parts included or chargeable?
- Is there an excess, claim limit or waiting period?
- Are existing faults or boilers over a certain age excluded?
- What happens if the boiler is considered beyond economic repair?
- Does the price increase after an introductory period?
- Can you choose the engineer, and how quickly are appointments offered?
- How do you cancel, and is there a minimum term?
Is the Enerus Boiler Service Plan right for you?#
The Enerus plan is a straightforward option if your priority is keeping your annual service organised and spreading its cost through the year. You also receive a digital service record, efficiency optimisation, seven-day technical support, priority booking and a repair-labour discount.
It is not the same as boiler cover. If you specifically want an insurance product to meet eligible emergency repair costs, compare regulated policies and their exclusions separately. If you prefer not to pay monthly, Enerus also offers a one-off boiler service for £89.
Keep your boiler service on schedule#
Enerus services boilers throughout the North East, including Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Ashington, Cramlington, Blyth and surrounding areas.

Frequently asked questions#
Does the Enerus Boiler Service Plan include repairs?#
No. It is a maintenance membership rather than breakdown insurance. Repairs, replacement parts and call-outs are chargeable. Members currently receive 15% off chargeable repair labour, subject to the applicable terms and exclusions.
Is boiler cover the same as a boiler service?#
No. Boiler cover is intended to respond to specified breakdowns or emergencies under its terms. A service is planned maintenance. Some cover products include servicing, but others do not.
How often should a gas boiler be serviced?#
HSE strongly advises homeowners to have gas appliances, flues and pipework regularly maintained and serviced at least annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Follow your boiler manufacturer’s instructions as well.
Do landlords need a CP12 every year?#
Landlords must arrange an annual gas safety check for relevant appliances and flues they provide. The gas safety record is often called a CP12. It is separate from routine servicing, although both can be arranged at the same visit.
Can I pay for an Enerus boiler service without joining a plan?#
Yes. The current one-off boiler service price is £89, so you can book and pay for the appointment separately.
