How heat pumps work
Overview of Air Source Heat Pumps
Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are innovative systems that extract heat from outdoor air to efficiently warm your home, even in colder climates. They’re a sustainable alternative to traditional boilers, widely used across the UK.
Heat Extraction Process
An ASHP operates by circulating a special refrigerant through an outdoor unit. This refrigerant absorbs heat from the outside air, functioning effectively down to temperatures as low as -10°C or lower, making it suitable for regions like Northumberland.
Compression Stage
Once the refrigerant captures the heat, a compressor within the unit increases its pressure and temperature. This process transforms the low-grade heat into a higher temperature suitable for indoor heating, typically reaching 40°C to 55°C.
Heat Transfer
The warmed refrigerant then passes through a heat exchanger, transferring the captured heat to your home’s heating system. This can include radiators, underfloor heating, or a hot water cylinder, providing consistent warmth and hot water throughout the day.
Circulation and Reuse
After releasing its heat, the refrigerant cools and cycles back to the outdoor unit to repeat the process. This continuous loop ensures a steady supply of heat, operating quietly and efficiently with minimal maintenance.
Energy Efficiency
ASHPs use electricity to power the compressor and fan, but they generate 3-4 times more energy than they consume. This high efficiency can reduce energy bills by up to 50% compared to older systems, offering long-term savings.
